Windows 7 seems to continually have USB problems. I didn’t catch this one because the drivers that HP has in their database and the drivers the Microsoft has in their system are difficult to compare. According Windows the drivers are up to date yet there are updated drivers on the HP site? How is anyone supposed to know if the USB driver you have installed is the latest?

I guess every Windows operating system has it’s quirks and USB drivers are the big one for Windows 7. Here is the guidance..

Before you buy a copy of Windows 7, ensure that your computer’s manufacturer has an updated USB driver for your computer. This will be the only thing that renders your computer dead in the water. My Compaq v2000 laptop runs Win7 great until the USB drivers zonked on me. The manufacturer refuses to write updated drivers so I am waiting on a fix from Microsoft update to repair this issue.

I am also waiting on a coprocessor for my dv6809wm HP laptop. Come on Microsoft.. get on these drivers and pick up the slack where HP naturally fails. HP absolutely sucks at writing software.

Now my USB devices work, now they don’t. WTF. This is a problem I have been having since I installed Windows 7 on my laptop. Now, the laptop is a Compaq Presario V2000 with an AMD Semperon CPU an 1GB of RAM. The operating system runs like a dream, it is just that the USB functionality is intermittently troublesome and at times more unstable then Charles Manson on crack. Would I still recommend Windows 7 to other users? Absolutely. It is still great. It is just a little buggy the way it handles USB devices.

It takes a little getting used to having your open programs grouped in images. This was the first thing I noticed after I installed Windows 7. Now that I have gotten used to it, I LOVE IT! I simply have to hover over the icons on the task bar and a windows switching menu with a snapshot of what that windows looks like.

This is a feature I have been enjoying in Linux for quite some time using Compiz. I am hearing people state that this is a rip off. Let’s face it people. By nature corporations take their competitor’s products, reverse engineer them, and create a similar product that out does the competitor. This is nature of business. Now, for secure operating systems and stable servers I will likely never part from Linux. Windows on the laptops makes sense though. All my applications work, Windows 7 is nearly idiot proof they made it so simple, and I am excited that some of the rich features of other operating systems are finally being brought into Windows.

Rocket Dock

Good old Rocketdock has completely customizable icons for just about everything you can think of. It is not only eye candy for the desktop but serves a great purpose in Windows 7 ad Vista that have the inline menu system you have to dig through to get to programs. This allows the user to keep free floating icons from cluttering up the desktop and keep a neat and orderly appearance on your computer. Rocketdock should be considered a productivity tool simply for the fact that you can set up unmistakable and large Icons on your desktop for your most frequently used programs. So far it has worked for ever version of Windows I have installed it on (XP, VISTA, 7). I highly recommend it.

Sure it will. The drivers have been moved to Windows Update. I have an HP Laserjet 6MP that dropped off of the printer list when I try and add a new printer. No problem. Many websites tell you to press the button to search windows update. The problem is that button doesn’t exist in the initial interface. So, here is what you do. Install the wrong driver that IS on the list. Then go into the printer properties and install a new device driver. This brings up a new and improved printer addition wizard that has the button to search the Windows update database. Click the button and wait about 5 to 10 minutes for the update to finish. This is downloading the legacy drivers for printer. Now, you will notice a whole lot more printers on your list. Pick the printer you want ( in my case it was a LJ6MP) and delete the incorrect driver from the list. There you go.
